United World Wrestling Introduces Amateur MMA
Pankration Elite Rebranded to Amateur MMA
United World Wrestling (UWW) is proud to announce a major step forward in the evolution of combat sports: the rebranding of Pankration Elite as Amateur MMA. This strategic decision acknowledges the strong similarities between the Elite format of Pankration and modern mixed martial arts (MMA), marking an exciting new chapter for athletes and fans alike.
What Changes?
New Name, Same Spirit: While the discipline evolves in name and recognition, the competition structure remains the same. Amateur MMA will continue to be held on UWW-approved mats, preserving its unique identity apart from professional MMA, which takes place in cages.
Age Categories Remain Traditional: The classic Traditional Pankration format will remain in place for younger athletes in the U15, U17, and U20 age brackets. These divisions will ensure appropriate skill development and safety according to age-specific rules.
Why This Matters
This evolution is designed to:
Enhance the organizational efficiency of combat sports under UWW
Reduce costs for participating national federations
Promote the global development and recognition of Amateur MMA
